Sat.1/14/12-Where's Winchester Tx. & Murphy's Steak House ??

*We can always rely on Charlie Cluck of the Z club, this month's event planner, to find the most hidden roads & best new restaurants. He did it again for *Winding Roads #11. We always post "All cars & drivers welcome....." & some 20+ people came in a very mixed group. RX, Z240-300, G37, Miatas, Nissan, SC300 brands totaled 12 cars. *Weather was beautiful, cool & warming; all the roadsters went top down. Charlie's back roads took us just east of Smithville to the very small & isolated rural town of Winchester. There, in a large old renovated brick & stone 1913 general store, was Murphy's Steak House (www.EatAtMurphys.com). Complete with tin ceiling, mirrored saloon bar & turn-of-the-century decor, it was a real piece of preserved small town Texas history. *Our large reserved table awaited as the other spaces were already filing up. Calling ahead was a good move for this obviously popular place out in the middle of farm & ranch country. Both the menu & waitresses were friendly & pleasant to look at. Steaks were more than reasonably priced by the ounces & all were oversized when served. Although very unusual for any restaurant, all steaks were cooked *exactly* to order. The sides & salad bar were also excellent. All reasons why this place is so popular. If you know where it is, better make reservations to avoid a long wait on weekends, especially evenings. *After a leisurely lunch, the hard core drivers followed Charlie to "Cindy's Gone Hog Wild" road house on Hwy 71 just east of Austin for a cool one,....or two before going home. *This was Charlie's "Retirement Drive" since he gave up event planning for the Z club. However, we took a poll that voted he should continue doing his *Winding Roads* turn every 3-4 months. I guess I should notify Charlie of this vote of confidence & great recognition ?? *Thanks to all who came & especially Charlie Cluck, my hero. We had a great time. Pics to our web if you have any, please. *Next Event: Sat.-Sun.Feb.25-26 *Winding Roads* #12-7th ANNUAL GRANDE HILL COUNTRY TOUR to Leakey Tx. Dec.17'11-Annual Amazing Xmas Lights Tour-Johnson City/Silver K Cafe.

*We got a break in the weather this last Sat; cloudy, dry, & warm enough for tops down other than just mine. Some regulars were lost to later rain rescheduling from Dec.3 & unfinished shopping. But, ...5 cars showed for the beginning of the drive & 3 more caught up with us later. The final total with several new visitors was 8 cars & 15 people in RX, Miata, S2000, BMW, Mazda6, 350Z & Toyota models. *The always fun-to-drive Hamilton Pool, Crumley Ranch Rd. & Fitzhugh Rd. were mostly clear other than a few deer crossing & livestock wondering. A brisk pace got us to Johnson City way too early by 4pm since the Silver K Cafe (www.SilverKcafe.com) wasn't open until 5pm. So, off we went to Sandy & Willow City, arriving back @ the Silver K by 4:50pm. *Owner Kay Pratt had a big table in the back room ready to go. As always, everything on the menu was terrific. Computer order entry must have lumped all dinners, drinks & deserts in 3 groups in the only gliche, taking 20 mins.+ to untangle & separate our bills. Oh well, the lights looked better after a little digestion......?? *The erection of Johnson City's major displays begins Oct.1 & continues until switch on Thanksgiving Day. The little city park had new lights & displays added, the warm-inside historic county courthouse was fully drapped from dome to ground & the Pedernales Electric Coop's many giant oaks were completely covered from ground to branch tips in tiny white lights. Even the surrounding square buildings had added new shops, restaurants & decorations. This is, by far, the biggest display in the hill country, close to Austin & with good restaurants. That's why we come back every year to feel all warm & fuzzy @Xmas time. *Thanks to Kay @the Silver K, all the Johnson City groups for the amazing displays & those who came with us to enjoy this special holiday event. *Pics to the web master by "Contact Us" please. LD. (a confessed Xmas junkie).

*David Johnson from Roger Beasley Mazda, the Mazda Raceway group & Harris Hill Road hosted a very exceptional track introduction event last Saturday. Set for 50 cars, it drew another 100 before the day ended. Lot's of RX-7s & 8s, including LS2 & 3-rotor conversions, Miatas, Mazda 2s, 3s, & a few other brands showed for the 10am-3pm activities. See the Dec.10 Event Calendar list of all the happenings. *One of the highlights was the on-going, repeating &*very brisk*lead-follow laps, not just slow parades. Led by instructors from 10:30am-1:pm to show the best line through turns, we gained speed with familarity of the track. My stock '89 RX-7vert. was pushing hard in the later runs, but kept up with the rotary's high rpms. Some of us lined up again in turn for 6+ runs of 5 laps each; too much fun !! *Milt's BBQ catered a fine lunch. Everything was very good, but the polish sausage was the best ever,.... anywhere. Some of us went 2 laps on that. Besides providing all of this, Mazda had some very nice giveaways for every driver afterwards. *This new & generous dealership interest in Mazda clubs is the real deal. They also supported our entries @The Rolling Sculpture Car Show in October where we in turn promoted our sponsors with an engine display & their handouts. *Please thank David Johnson (DJ) (MazdaStuff@Gmail.com), the Roger Beasley Mazda group, Mazda Raceway & Bo Rivers (Bo@HarrisHill.com) @Harris Hill Road Track (www.HarrisHillRoad.com) for giving us such a nice Xmas gift. We look forward to supporting DJ & Mazda's next event. *Thanks also to the all the RXs & other Mazdas who came to make a huge 150+ showing. If you missed this one, well,........zzzzzz, .........duh !! ............................................................................................................................ UPCOMING EVENTS from TexasRxs & the other*Winding Roads*group of clubs; OPEN TO ALL CARS & DRIVERS:

*10am Sun.Jan.15-MONTHLY DRIVE-TBA.
